History
Duncan Creek Baptist Church was organized in the late 1800's under a brush arbor situated on the northeast side of Laurens County. It was named after the Duncan Creek. The church formerly belonged to the Tyger River Association. It was admitted into the Tumbling Shoals Association in 1888 at New Grove Baptist Church.
Duncan Creek's first church building was erected years later. Three acres of land was purchased from Mr. Martin Poole for $75.00 to build the church. The one room church was located "down under the hill".
Under the pastorship of Rev. B.B. Bibbs, land was purchased for a cemetery.
In 1912, Rev. Enoch Moore, baptized the church's first joiners, Brother Lonnie Caldwell and Brother Douglas Reeder.
Between the years of 1923-1950, the following ministers were called to pastor: Rev. B.F. Calvern, Rev. Ollie Dillard, Rev. T.R. Tolbert, Rev. M.F. Wilson, Rev. Wallace, Rev. A.M. Matthew, Rev. Broadus, and Rev. H.A. Davis.
Under the leadership of Rev C. J. Britt, our twelfth pastor, the Sunday school was established with Sister Mary Irby.
In 1954, Rev. Edward David Bell was elected our thirteenth pastor. On January 29, 1957, Pastor Bell, officers, and the congregation marched from "down under the hill" into the present edifice.
During the pastorship of Rev. Bell, the following ministers were licensed: Rev. W. E. Byrd Sr., Rev. Barry Caldwell, Rev. Michael Wilson, and Rev. Hugh Lee Elmore Jr.
Reverend and Mrs. E. D. Bell (Classie) served faithfully for over 34 years. On July 23, 1989, the Lord called Rev. Bell into eternal rest.
In 1989, Rev. W. A. Pilgrim was elected the fourteenth pastor. Under his leadership the following ministers were licensed: Rev. Gladys B. Nance, Rev. Nevelyn Smith, and Rev. Rose Mary Byrd.
In April 1992, God sent Rev. S. Andrew Mattison to serve as our fifteenth pastor. Under his leadership Evangelist Angie Herbert-Cleveland, Rev. David L. Byrd, Rev. James Jones, Rev. Ernest Rice, Rev. Alfred Mosley and Min. Timothy Bryson were licensed to preach the gospel.
On July 27th, 2011, Pastor Derrick Barksdale was installed as Duncan Creek’s 16th Pastor. Pastor Barksdale presses upon the congregation that Jesus Christ is Lord, and without Him we can do nothing. Under his leadership Pastor Barksdale prays to continue Duncan Creeks long History of Worship and maintaining that Jesus is the only way to the Father.
